Passage of Clean Energy Future legislation welcome

The final passage of climate change legislation in the Australian Parliament today is overdue but nevertheless very welcome, according to Climate Action Monaro.

President of Climate Action Monaro, Ms Jenny Goldie, says the world community has only a few years to turn the situation around, that is, to reduce the amount of carbon being emitted into the atmosphere.

Ms Goldie says Australia has made a good start, however, she would have liked to have seen legislation introduced back in 2007 when the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was released.

"This AR4 report found that human influences - namely greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation - had very likely contributed to climate change as seen in sea level rise, extreme hot nights, cold nights and cold days, and worsening heat waves, drought and heavy precipitation events," says Ms Goldie.

"Monaro residents, particularly farmers, have noticed changes to weather patterns in the past few decades. For instance, there has been a decline in autumn and winter rainfall but more in spring and summer. Many of these changes can be attributed to long term climate change," she says.

"Farmers can help through various measures including reafforestation. Upper Murrumbidgee Landcare and K2C are to be commended for being 'on the ball' and organising a workshop on Carbon Farming in Michelago on 19 November."
