Total Fire Ban Information

E-mail Print PDF

Total Fire Ban (TOBAN) Rules

From the NSW Rural Fire Service web site...

During a Total Fire Ban no fire may be lit in the open and all Fire permits are suspended. This includes incinerators and barbecues which burn solid fuel, e.g. wood or charcoal.

You may use a gas or electric barbecue, but only if:

  • It is on a residential property within 20 metres of the house or dwelling
  • It is a picnic area and the appliance is approved by Council, National Parks or State Forest
  • It is under the direct control of a responsible adult
  • The ground within 2 metres of the barbecue is cleared of all materials which could burn
  • You have an immediate and continuous supply of water available

A range of activities may be exempt from Total Fire Bans, such as emergency infrastructure work or ceremonial fires. The RFS Commissioner is responsible for exemptions to Total Fire Bans. These exemptions are detailed in the NSW Government Gazette each time a total fire ban is declared.

Lighting a fire on a day of Total Fire Ban attracts a fine of up to $5500 and/or 12 months gaol. Penalties for a fire that escapes and damages or destroys life, property or the environment can attract much greater fines and gaol terms with maximums at $100,000 and/or 14 years gaol.

Civil law suits can also be brought against the person responsible for a fire by those seeking compensation for losses sustained.

For more information about total fire bans and fire permits, please visit the NSW Rural Fire Service web site.

Commuter Bus Trial Commencing on 27 February 2012

E-mail Print PDF

From Councillor Martin Hughes:

Deane's Transit Group will be running a trial Transborder bus service from Cooma to Canberra, commencing Monday 27 February 2012, leaving Cooma around 7am and returning around 7pm, Monday to Friday.

This three month trial is being run in response to a Cooma-Monaro Shire Council survey circulated earlier in the year to establish the level of interest in operating such a service.

If the service is to operate beyond the trial period, it is essential that as many people as possible are made aware of its existence and that patronage over the trial period will encourage the operator to continue the service on a permanent basis. It is planned for the bus to stop on request. The bus will also provide free WIFI, wheelchair access and bicycle storage.

The proposed route at present is Cooma-Bredbo-Michelago-Calwell-Tuggeranong-Woden-City and return. The Canberra route may change depending on demand.

It would be appreciated if the villages (Bredbo, Colinton, Michelago) could liaise with the CMSC regarding Park and Ride facilities for those who wish to drive in to catch the bus. Details about the ticket prices and times will be published later.

There is a competition running at present to "Name the Service" with an HTC Wildfire Smartphone, courtesy of Deane's Transit Group, being the prize for the preferred submission. Submissions can be lodged at www.cooma.nsw.gov.au, the closing date being 22 December 2011 with the winner being announced on the website.

Use your travel time more productively - books, newspapers, WIFI - sleep!

Arrive for work or home more relaxed and less weary.

Save money!

Reduce the level of traffic on the Monaro Highway at peak periods - reduce carbon emissions - reduce the likelihood of accidents - reduce wear and tear on both vehicles and roads.

CATCH A BUS !

Old Photos of the Region

E-mail Print PDF

Do you have any interesting old photos of the Michelago region, including local residents (past and current)?

We are looking for any photos to be included in a heritage brochure that the MRCA is developing and also possibly to decorate the Michelago Communty Hall.

We are happy to bring a scanner to your place so that you don't have to lend your photos out and worry about them being misplaced!

If you do have some photos and are willing to share (copyright will remain with the owner of the photos, unless otherwise agreed), please contact any of the MRCA committee members or e-mail us.
